Daily living habits are among the most important determinants of health. A five years study of 7,000 adults showed that health and life expectancy are significantly related to
- Three meals a day, at regular times with no snacks
- Breakfast everyday
- Moderate exercise 2-3 times a week
- Adequate sleep (7-8 hours a night)
- No smoking
- Moderate weight
- No Alcohol (or only in moderation)
To summarize the study results, a 45 year old man with 0-3 of these characteristics has a remaining life expectancy of 22 years (age 67), while one with 6-7 has a life expectancy of 33 years (age 78).
In other words, 11 years could be added to life expectancy by making simple changes in daily living habits. Moreover with improved health, the quality of life during those years is greatly enhanced.
